"Woven Through Time" Works by Nivi Jaswal

December 3rd - February 8th, 2020

Artist Reception: Saturday, December 14th from 6-8:30 p.m.

Gallery Seven presents “Woven Through Time” with artworks by Nivi Jaswal.  Nivi is a native of Punjab (India), and her current work focuses on rural Punjabi Women Artisans, their life in Punjab and their hand-embroidered tapestries known as Phulkari (lit., Flower Work). Sadly, Phulkari, like most ethnic handicrafts in the world is on the decline and these women artisans work painstakingly to revive patterns, stitches and motifs that virtually disappeared in the unfortunate aftermath of the Partition of India.

As an artist, Nivi likes to mix colors, textures and add an element of abstract to her work - while at the same time trying to capture the cultural ethos of her native state. Nivi’s artwork has a fresh contemporary feel while at the same time drawing on these ancient motifs. The end result is something striking and unique. It brilliantly combines precision craftsmanship, modern abstractionism, and the folk art that she pays homage too. This work is multi-faceted and overtime reveals more and more of itself to the viewer.
